Robotic Joint Replacement
is an innovative approach in Orthopaedics, combining the precision of robotics with joint replacement surgery. Mr. Robin utilizes the Mako Robotic System, which is recognized worldwide for its successful use in joint replacement surgeries, including partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, and total hip replacement.
The process begins with a CT scan to create a personalized plan for the surgery, and there are no additional costs for the scan or the robotic arm system. Once the plan is made, it is reviewed by engineers in the U.S. and Jonathan’s Mako Product Specialist. Jonathan personally reviews the plan before surgery. During the procedure, a robotic arm is guided by Jonathan to precisely shape the bone and ensure the joint replacement is accurate, with real-time fine-tuning adjustments if necessary to account for ligament balancing.
Robotic joint replacement surgery can be beneficial for patients experiencing joint pain, limited mobility, or deterioration due to conditions such as osteoarthritis. If traditional methods of pain management and physical therapy are no longer effective, robotic-assisted joint replacement can offer a more precise and less invasive option. Patients who undergo this procedure often experience reduced pain, less tissue damage, and faster recovery, making it an excellent solution and the most modern advance in joint replacement surgery.
How it works
Jonathan uses the Mako robotic arm system for his joint replacement surgery. The Mako system is highly regarded globally for its use in successful joint replacement surgery. After discussion regarding whether you would benefit from joint replacement, Jonathan will also discuss if the Mako system should be used. It can be used for all types of joint replacements that Mr Robin performs including partial knee replacement, total knee replacement and total hip replacement. If the Mako system is to be used then Jonathan will refer you to have a CT scan to be performed which will allow for a personalised plan for your joint replacement to be created. There is no additional cost for this scan (or in fact for the use of the robot). Once the plan is created, it is reviewed by engineers in the USA, followed by Mr Robin’s Mako Product Specialist in accordance with Jonathan’s preferences for performing the surgery. Mr Robin then reviews and verifies these plans prior to surgery and makes any fine tuning adjustments if necessary. During the operation, markers attached to your bones allow a computer to know where you leg is in space real-time. The computer is directly connected to the robotic arm which is guided by Jonathan to allow the bone to be shaped to fit the joint replacement according to your personalised plan. At the time of surgery Mr Robin then assess how your joint is moving and how well balanced it is with a trial of the joint replacement. If any further fine tuning is required this is done via the computerised plan which is then enacted by Jonathan using the robotic arm again. Once Mr Robin is satisfied with the balance and movement of your joint replacement he will implant the definitive joint replacement components.
Advantages of using robotics for joint replacements
Preoperative personalised plan
Your preoperative CT scan creates a personalised, highly accurate, three-dimensional plan for your surgery including a virtual realtime image of what your joint replacement will look like once inside your body.
High accuracy of robotic arm system
The robotic Mako system allows Jonathan to plan and execute your surgery precisely and reliably with the use of robotic precision.
Ability to assess real-time and accurately adjust
Mr Robin is able to plan, anticipate and adjust your joint replacement until satisfied during the process of your surgery.
Potential for reduction in pain and earlier recovery
There have been studies which show that use of the Mako robotic arm system for joint replacement surgery have resulted in less pain, earlier recovery with highly satisfactory results to date. Jonathan carefully follows up all of his patients ensuring the best possible outcome.
