The Contribution of Proximal Femoral Geometry to Hip Displacement in Cerebral Palsy.
Overview of MD Thesis:
Deformity of the proximal femoral geometry in children with cerebral palsy (CP) is very common and leads to significant health related issues for the child, their immediate family and carers, and health professionals. Up to 35% of children with CP have hip subluxation, which if left untreated, leads to gait inefficiencies in ambulant children and difficulties with sitting, perineal hygiene, pressure areas and other nursing issues in those who are not ambulant. The anatomy of the proximal femur is difficult to investigate due to its three-dimensional nature, however it is of vital importance when analysing gait pathology and planning surgery for femoral deformity correction. This thesis examines the natural history of proximal femoral deformity in children with CP and describes new information researched relating femoral geometry to the functional ability of the child. The thesis also reports on the accuracy of old and new techniques for measuring the proximal femoral geometry in children with CP as well as developing and testing a new classification for hip displacement in CP.
